Scam Alert: Fake Debit/Credit Card Lock Text Messages

We want to make all members aware of a new scam text message that is circulating in our community.

What’s Happening

Members have reported receiving a text that looks like it’s from a bank or credit union. The message says something like: “Your debit card has been locked. Please call [phone number] to unlock it.”

If the member calls, the number connects to an automated system that asks them to enter their full debit card number. Once this information is provided, scammers now have access to use the card fraudulently.

What You Should Do

  • Do not call the number listed in these texts.

  • Do not enter your card number, PIN, or any other personal information when prompted by an unexpected message or call.

  • Delete the text immediately after you see it.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Heartland Credit Union will never send you a text asking for your full debit card number.

  • If you’re ever unsure whether a message is legitimate, call us directly using the number on the back of your debit card or visit our website.

  • Regularly monitor your account activity in online or mobile banking for any suspicious charges.
